Don’t push with your problems and struggles, lead with your strengths.

In some bottles, you can find your strengths and start to thrive.

While any one of your strengths will depend on your interests and many other factors, you are certain to energise others by seeking your strengths out and by helping others to see their own strengths. The inspiration you provide by describing a better tomorrow can catapult a person into a completely new and better direction.

Whether you’re just starting a business or are a seasoned entrepreneur, it’s important to know yourself. Take a good hard look at your strengths and weaknesses?

What holds you back, and maintains the struggle can usually be boiled down to a few things:

  • You have not identified your real strengths.
  • You are in a holding pattern because of the fear of failure.
  • You have the victim mentality.
  • You have a scarcity mentality.
  • You have lost sight of the basics.

“Good food and wine help people to plan a better future as it lets down their inhibitions and helps them to express their thoughts. But, be sure to have someone taking notes”.  Peter Sergeant

Sometimes, finding your strengths can be difficult because it takes time and patience. I have often used what I call the ‘Future Magic Bottle’.  Every time you do something well and you really liked doing, or every time you feel you have discovered another one of your key attributes or strengths, write a note about it and place it in the magic bottle.

After say six months open the bottle and sort through your notes. Rewrite those that you can update with new thinking and then start a new list of your key attributes and strengths.

Take the list and put it in a prominent place where you will constantly be made aware of them. Perhaps pinned to the back of the toilet door or on the refrigerator. Do this until such times as the new strengths have been internalised and have become part of your everyday approach to work and indeed your life.

People who make a difference are more aware of their natural strengths. What you learn is that your most effective style of working.  This will largely be defined by what they are and what you do naturally. The more you work from a strengths-based approach, the more engaging you will become in working with your stakeholders.

If you look at the people who made the most difference in your life, you will find they were those people who allowed you to soar above your struggles using your strengths? You need to use your unique set of attributes and strengths to be sure that the people you work with learns and grows every day and has fun in your presence and in the business.

Keep adding to your Future Magic Bottle, because as you grow, new strengths will become evident and they should be captured and built upon.

Personal Experience:

While a  bottle of wine helps people to express their thoughts, be sure to have someone taking notes.

The problem I have found with using a list of strengths that you’ve compiled is that you have a biased opinion of yourself. Most people either think too highly of them selves
or too little of themselves. This is where you need people who can give you an objective view of your strengths and offer solutions.

Most people can figure out their obvious strengths but there are few who can figure out and measure the value of their strengths and what to do with them. Talk to people who know you.

Often I find that writing a positive statement about key strengths that you can articulate with confidence, will do wonders in relieving the pressure of your struggles. These are often called affirmations. An example might be

“My strength is my ability to handle change through good planning practices. As a planner, I am able to turn around a negative working environment and create a positive outlook for clients.”.
