Find somewhere different to relax, think and reflect on your big picture
When you lift the ‘bonnet’ of your business, is it a pretty site?
When conditions change, often the most successful businesses are the slowest to adapt. The fresh leadership and thinking that led to the business’s initial success are often replaced by a rigid devotion to the status quo.
Every business needs to initiate fundamental change just to keep up. Change can be very good, but first, know what you should never change. “She’ll be right”, can cost you everything. Even franchises can become stale, if they are not kept up-to-date and fresh.
So, where do you look? Introducing a good Business Model and Value Chain would be a good place to start. They will help you to turn your business into a high-performance machine. They will dramatically change your perspective as a business owner and greatly enhance your business performance.
In order to propagate your vision or big picture, you must communicate. Whether it’s in person, online, or non-verbally, we inevitably have to communicate with people. So your success will come from your ability to communicate well with others.
However, it’s not enough just to speak to the other people. In growing relationships in your Value Chain, you need to be able to take into consideration who they are, what message you’re trying to get across, when the right time to deliver your message is, and much more. But without a good Business Model, your messages run the risk of confusing people and inaction is the regrettable consequence.
Are all the cogs in your business in alignment and working together? Or, are they failing to mesh the gears and becoming more dysfunctional every day?
“If you think you are the entire picture, you will never see the big picture”. John Maxwell

Even today, if I mention the words ‘Business Model’ or “Value Chain” people’s eyes glaze over. It takes me back 50 years to when the words ‘Cash Flow’ were virtually unknown in small business circles. Yet business owners and managers still wonder why their pig picture vision is not coming alive. In my experience, these two things will drive you business better and faster than most other things as long as you have the working capital to support them.
In my opinion, the following 10 documents are the most important if you want to achieve your vision. Of course, other things will play an important part such as the talent in your organisation the products and services you offer and the attitude of the whole business towards action orientation.
- Business Model
- Business Plan
- Value Chain
- Risk Management Plan
- Knowledge Management Plan
- Marketing Plan
- Health and well-being Plan
- Financial Reports
