Change engines are always emerging
The political tensions of the Middle East, the economic development of China and India, the volatility of energy prices, and concerns about global climate change have brought attention back to the energy source upon which our society most depends. Energy supply is a major change engine, impacting most areas of our lives.
With the supply of oil uncertain and no clear consensus about alternative energy sources, the continued viability of carbon-fuelled economic development and thus the future of our highly mobile society is being questioned.
If you are trying to make sense of developments since the early 2000s you will find that information is plentiful, but reliable perspective and judgment on future change engines are harder than ever to come by.
It’s as if the depth of the issues at stake makes it harder to step back dispassionately and look at the way our community is operating and the change engines that are impacting it and shaping its viability for tomorrow.
- The generation waves, the Baby Boomers, Gen X and Gen Y and Millenials.
- Population explosions or populations in decline.
- The ageing population.
- Telecommunications, broadband
- Globalisation and its impact on competitive forces.
- Entrepreneurial inputs to a community, or lack of.
- Immigration and refugees.
- Technology like cloud computing and robotics across all industries.
- Innovation that is driving new possibilities.
- Social media has changed many marketing practices forever.
- Revitalised communities, communities with new growth potential.
- Content marketing is creating changes in customers behaviour.
- Advisors who advocate innovation and new opportunities.

- The emergence of the flexible working environment.
- The downsizing of major corporations and governments.
- Research, change being done on purpose.
- Transport infrastructure, new roads, electric cars, rail and air.
- Cultural changes.
- New and improving business models.
- Crime and terrorism levels.
- Environment issues and protection.
- Government instability and inappropriate
- Operating in a silo along with isolation and loneliness.
- Merging of local government areas.
- Interest rates and availability of finance.
- And so on…
You can’t stop these change engines just as you can’t stop the population ageing and people are not going to stop researching tomorrow.
What are the people in your community good at, where is their passion, what do they like doing? These are the things that will either lessen or increase the impact of change engines.

Be prepared to embrace change engines with an open mind. While there might be negative impacts there are more possibilities being opened up.
Don’t rely on governments to help manage the transition following the impact of a change engine effectively. They need a long-term perspective, much longer than customary political cycles. The democratic governments of the past 10 years have largely failed to rise to the challenges created by change engines in most parts of the world.
The best way to keep going with change engines is to simply keep going until you realise the benefits for your community.
